Jeans have been worn for nearly 150 years. They’ve grown commonplace; everyone wears them! So, what’s the deal with finding a pair that fits?

Small variances in sizes, fabrics, measurements, treatment and various other things can make a significant difference in the appearance of two pairs of jeans on you. And that doesn’t even take you or your body type into account.

It’s More Than Just Your Waist and Height

The average European man stands about 178 cm tall and wears pants with a waist size of 31 or 32. If that’s the case, you’re in luck because most jeans will (probably) look amazing on you. This is because jeans are typically built based on the measurements of average men.

But, as someone 178 cm tall and normally wears a size 31 (give or take), I know firsthand that even average-sized men have trouble finding jeans that fit. There’s a lot more to Stretch Denim thing than our waistlines and heights.

How Should Jeans Fit?

Jeans were once considered workwear: everyday clothing that had to be sturdy. It didn’t matter how it looked. This meant that jeans had to fit any body type and be generously cut.

When blue jeans became popular as a fashion item, designers tried to improve the fits to achieve various appearances. Patternmakers are currently creating strategies and methods of stitching that result in the optimal fit.

Jeans are often mentioned to be a second skin. And because we wear our jeans almost every day, they get a lot of wear and tear—and you normally have to spend a lot of money to get into a good pair.

Leg Dimensions

The shape of the leg determines the numerous types of fits. Three measurements are used to define it: the thigh, the knee, and the leg opening. All measurements of pants are taken with the jeans laying flat, and the results are doubled.

Rise

The ascent is the estimation from the lower part of the groin to the highest point of the belt. That implies you have a front ascent as well as a back ascent. Not at all like pants and slacks; pants have a bent back ascent. It goes all the way around to the front of the pants. This is what gives jeans their form-fitting appearance.

The Dimensions of Length

The golden rule is that the break (where the legs terminate) should be right where your feet begin when it comes to jean length. When worn without shoes, the front of the hem will lie on top of your instep, while the back will kiss the ground.

Fabric of Jeans

Denim has typically been made from 100 percent cotton, in which case it is referred to as ‘stiff denim.’ Stretch denim has become the norm for so many fashion denim companies as fits have slimmed down over a couple of years, and spinning technology has developed.

If you need your jeans trimmed, have them done by someone who knows how to use a sewing machine. A decent hemming job requires practice. Also, shortening the jeans slightly changes the fit if the jeans are tapered.
